State Chapters

Fox Valley Chapter

Welcome to the Fox Valley Chapter! Our chapter represents a wide geographic area from Fond du Lac to Green Bay and a wide range of paralegal expertise. Our chapter includes corporate paralegals, litigation paralegals, judicial assistants, and students, just to name a few. Serving such diversity can really be a challenge, but it also opens many doors of opportunity for our membership.

Fox Valley Chapter generally meets on the second Tuesday of every month, typically at a centrally-located restaurant in Appleton. The Chapter meets September through April. Except for the December meeting, the meetings consist of two parts:

· Networking: Every month, a new personal or professional development topic is selected and a discussion is led on that topic. This is a great way to interact with other paralegals and practice your networking skills in a safe environment where you receive immediate feedback. Past topics include how to create an elevator speech, establishing a mentor-mentee relationship, and completing a work place values assessment.

· Speaker: The speaker is a great way to earn continuing education credit and to stay current on various legal topics. Topics are based on membership interest and speaker availability. Past topics include process service, ethics, school employment law, and drug court.

The December meeting is solely for networking and socializing with other paralegals. A topic, such as a Resume Revamp, will be used to lead the discussion.

In addition to the meeting, there are many opportunities to be involved with the Chapter. As a member, you can request a mentor in order to connect 1-on-1 with another paralegal. You will also receive notice of pro bono events such as those offered through Wills for Heroes and early notice of job openings which will be posted to the PAW website.

I would love to hear from you!

La Crosse Chapter

Jill Sherry and I are the co-directors of the La Crosse Chapter for this upcoming year. We would like to welcome back existing members and new members. The La Crosse Chapter holds monthly meetings from September through April during which speakers from different areas of law discuss updates on laws and procedure. We encourage members to provide suggestions for topics and speakers for these meetings so that we can be assured that the information is relevant and current.

Our chapter, as well as the association as a whole, promotes and encourages networking among its members and we also encourage students in paralegal programs to be active in the Association. In addition to our monthly meetings, the La Crosse Chapter is also active in the community. We work in conjunction with the La Crosse Bar Association to provide the Free Legal Clinic which is held once a month for individuals who need legal advice but cannot afford an attorney. We also hold an annual food drive to benefit the local food pantries.

We look forward to meeting up with you all again in the fall and welcome all new members and student members and encourage your involvement in our active chapter!

Madison Chapter

Welcome to the Madison Section of the PAW Newsletter. Thank you for your interest in the Paralegal Association of Wisconsin, Inc., on behalf of the Madison Chapter and the Officers and Board of Directors.

The Madison Chapter meetings begin in September and run through May with no meeting in the month of December. Normally meetings include speaker representation on various legal topics. Meeting locations rotate among local restaurants and local offices. We have several members that travel some distance for meetings, so some of our meetings are held in the evening and some are held during the lunch hour.

One goal of the PAW is to promote and encourage networking among its members, particularly among new members who may not know other paralegals in the area or who are new to the legal field. We also encourage students in Paralegal programs to be active in PAW. We look forward to meeting you and introducing you to other members of our Association.

Members: If you have moved or changed employers, please contact us with updated information. There are approximately ten returned e-mails every month.

Milwaukee Chapter

Meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of the month at Joey Buona's, downtown Milwaukee.

Meetings include one half hour of social time and a one half hour speaker presentation on a variety of legal topics, providing .5 CLE credit. In January, our presentation will provide an hour of Legal Ethics worth 1.0 CLE credit.

I look forward to meeting you and introducing you to other members of our Association at future general membership meetings of our Chapter. To that end, I would like to invite you to our next meeting.

One goal of PAW is to promote and encourage networking among its members, particularly among new members who may not know many other paralegals. You can develop contacts in the profession by attending our monthly Chapter meetings, and by joining and participating on a committee!

Please feel free to contact me with your questions or suggestions. Should you move or change employment, please inform me of your updated contact information, including email, to enable me to keep my records current.

Once again, thank you for your interest and involvement.

Wausau Chapter

Since attending the May 2010 PAW Seminar, Vusa Bentley set out to create the Wausau Chapter of PAW. The Wausau-area paralegals have been holding regular meetings since June 2010, and the Wausau Chapter became official on January 31, 2011! (A special “thank you” to Anita Seering of Ruder Ware for her hard work and dedication in helping to establish the Wausau Chapter). Vusa, a Paralegal at Olsen Law Office in Wausau, is the current Chapter director.

The Wausau Chapter meets either the second Wednesday or second Thursday or each month, depending on the month, from 12:00 noon to 1:15 p.m. Our speakers consist of judges, attorneys, clerks, and law-related employees who dedicate their time and efforts to help educate our local paralegals in various areas of law. For more information about our meetings, please contact Vusa as indicated below.

We take a great pride in our newly-established Chapter and hope to host the Annual PAW seminar in the near future!
